Dominic Miller and his magic guitar. Sting’s right-hand man live in Bologna and Naples

Over 35 years of honourable career behind him, an impressive resume of collaborations with a host of international music giants, from Paul Simon to Sting, and a guitar playing style with few equals in the world. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Dominic Miller.

By Luca Testoni

The extra-tested right-hand man of the former Police leader (a hit of the calibre of ‘Shape Of My Heart’ was born practising on his acoustic guitar!), 64 years old, British by adoption (he was born in Argentina to an American father and Irish mother), likes to call himself an ‘instrumental songwriter’ and from 2017 onwards has released three albums on behalf of the very prestigious German label ECM, a cult label for jazz fans.

With ‘Vagabond’, the title of his third album released in 2023 – all instrumental from the first to the last note of its eight songs – Miller shows that he is definitely at ease when it comes to ‘sketching’ pop-folk soundscapes with jazz overtones in the form of riffs and arpeggios, that are both elegant and atmospheric, but also take the mind off things.

Accompanied by faithful bassist Nicolas Fiszman, pianist and keyboardist Jacob Karlzon and drummer Ziv Ravitz, he will treat himself to a short tour on Italian soil in May: he will be in Bologna (at the Bravo Caffè on May 12 and 13) and Naples (at the Teatro Bolivar on May 14).
