A packed autumn for Calibro 35: brand-new album and European tour

by Luca Testoni

It was supposed to be just a soundtrack for an atypical documentary, but Calibro 35 are to noir what Ellroy is to Los Angeles, resulting in what is practically a brand-new studio album. Enrico Gabrielli, Massimo Martellotta, Fabio Rondanini, and Tommaso Colliva, the four members of Calibro 35, will now perform it live across Italy and several European capitals, featuring a show enhanced by striking, fresh visuals.

The original soundtrack for Ellroy vs L.A., the documentary directed by Francesco Zippel exploring the relationship between California’s noir master James Ellroy and his hometown of Los Angeles, features twelve unreleased tracks and drops October 9th via Record Kicks. The album was preceded by two singles: “L.A. Confidential” recently joined the lead track “Riots.”

The tour kicks off with a preview on September 24th at Hiroshima Mon Amour in Turin, a premiere not to be missed.

Moving forward, they perform at Teatro delle Saline, Akroama in Cagliari on October 24th. November dates include London’s Jazz Café (Nov 4), Madrid’s Babylon Café (Nov 6), Bergamo’s Druso (Nov 7), and Milan’s Teatro della Triennale (Nov 8). December brings dates at Gala Hala in Ljubljana (Dec 4), KC Grad in Belgrade (Dec 5), Vintage Industrial Bar in Zagreb (Dec 6), and Teatro Verdi in Genoa (Dec 10).

For this run, the Calibro 35 live set evolves into an ongoing dialogue between music and projected imagery. The screen will showcase excerpts from James Ellroy’s interview, historical footage of the “City of Angels”, and custom-made visuals created specifically for the project. On stage, the quartet will perform the soundtrack alongside a curated selection from their back catalog, spanning fan favorites and deep cuts.

Translating “Ellroy’s Los Angeles” into music was no easy feat,” Calibro 35 shared. “We started from the novel L.A. Confidential: its rhythm, characters, light, and shadows, the seamless blur between real and fictional events as the story unfolds until you lose track of what’s real and what isn’t.” Musical-wise, the band channels Ellroy’s noir universe through cinematic funk, jazz inflections, 1970s blaxploitation grooves, and modern urban beats.
