Ólöf Arnalds

Bio

Ólöf Arnalds, born in 1980, is an Icelandic singer, guitarist, and violinist. Her spontaneity, her charm, her sublime and ineffable singing, her persuasive and delicate voice – fragile and deep at the same time- carries the typical sounds of her country of origin.

From 2003 to 2007, after studying classical violin, Arnalds joined the Icelandic band Múm until she released, under the label 12Tónar, her first solo album Við Og Við, a collection of tracks entirely in Icelandic and dedicated to the “troubadour” tradition, a style that refers to the Old Provençal lyric poetry.

Her second album Innundir Skinni, released in 2012 by One Little Indian Records, differed from the previous one for the presence of three songs in English and saw the contribution of the famous singer Björk in the single “Surrender”. Two years later, Ólöf published Sudden Elevation: an album completely in English that maintained sounds and rhythms reminiscent of the Icelandic tradition.

Her latest album is Palme (2014), considered the most sensual and engaging one of all her works. The tracks in the album offer a range of fresh ideas and playful experimentations that stand out from her traditional acoustic sound. The songs of Ólöf Arnalds seem to be made of simple materials and great melodies, always on balance between dream and reality. Several times she was called «Reykjavik’s answer to Kate Bush», while The New York Times wrote of her: «a loud and clear voice, with a flicker that humanizes the purity of other worlds».

Ólöf Arnalds has enchanted the Italian public several times in live performances of particular delicacy and purity. Her last appearance in Italy was in July 2019 at the Ypsigrock Festival in Castelbuono (PA).
