Ask Carol, between indie-rock, cows and TikTok

The first ever concert in Italy by the revelation Ask Carol will be held at the Arci Bellezza in Milan on 21 May.

By Luca Testoni

Ask Thorsønn Borgen (Mr. Ask, drummer) and Karoline Strømshoved (Carol, singer and guitarist) hail from a remote mountain village in eastern Norway and have managed the unlikely feat of becoming a cult rock duo. Power of the internet.

It all started with isolation at the time of the pandemic. Unable to move, they decided to take their instrumentation, drums and electric guitars to be exact, out into nature. They plugged in and went at it to the sound of lashing indie rock, sometimes leaning towards psychedelia.

Their audience? Not human beings. Not at all. Just cows flocking to their impromptu shows from a nearby farm. Cows that, right from the start, showed that they liked their fresh, unstructured rock. So, they filmed the whole thing and their performances went viral on social media, starting with TikTok.

Unbelievably, at the moment they seem to have more fans in the US than at home. This is thanks to an overseas tour, but above all to some sessions (filmed by themselves) in the Mojave desert in California. The videos featuring the now tried and tested rock&nature combination seem to work great among the web audience.

Meanwhile, after the (self-produced) debut album of a couple of years ago, ‘AC I: Control You’, for the Norwegian answer to the White Stripes (remember?) the new year has already begun with new songs. To be listened to and… to be seen. Live, of course.
