Zig Zag Power Trio

Bio

The band Zig Zag Power Trio is composed of three legendary music industry innovators and was born when Vernon Reid and Will Calhoun, guitarist and drummer of the band Living Colour respectively, merged with legendary New York bassist Melvin Gibbs (Rollins Band, Decoding Society), to create a musical project that blends funk, rock, and jazz to breathe new life to long-standing and consolidated ties with the most remote sectors of jazz and funk.

The debut album of the “Powerful Trio”, Woodstock Sessions Volume 9, was published in 2018 and includes musically deep original songs, as well as covers with original arrangements by Pharoah Sanders, Ornette Coleman, Junior Kimbrough, and Ronald Shannon Jackson.

Vernon Reid. Born in 1958, Reid is a prolific American guitarist and songwriter and the main creative mind behind Living Colour’s musical catalogue. He has collaborated with the most extravagant personalities of the contemporary musical panorama. Among others, he has worked with guitarist Bill Frisell with whom he realized the album Smash & Scatteration (1985), one of the most eclectic and intense projects for both Frisell and Reid.

Will Calhoun. Calhoun’s curriculum can claim outstanding collaborations like the ones with Jaco Pastorius, Pharoah Sanders, Jack DeJohnette, and Wayne Shorter. Born in 1964, the New York drummer has been described as “The Number One Progressive Drummer” by the renowned magazine Modern Drummer three times, from 1989 to 1992.

Melvin Gibbs. Gibbs is considered one of the most talented American musicians in the funk and jazz panorama from the Eighties onwards. He has recorded with pioneers of the music vanguard like Defunkt, guitar genius Sonny Sharrock, and Downtown icon Arto Lindsay.
