Pet Shop Boys

I Pet Shop Boys formed in London in 1981 when singer Neil Tennant met keyboardist Chris Low. The duo completelyrevolutionized the musical standard thanks to productions of great impact and depth, giving life to what would be the main reference for Synth-pop.

The duo’s career took off in 1985 when Stephen Hague produced their first single “West End Girls”, which became an international success and propelled the Pet Shop Boys to release their first album Please in 1986. The album certified the duo’s international success and a year later was followed by Actually from which were extracted “It’s a Sin” and a duet between Tennant and the great Dusty Springfield, “What Have I Done to Deserve This?”. Both singles reached the first spots in international Top Ten.

By now among the most important artists in the music panorama, Pet Shop Boys kept producing and releasing music for the following two decades. Among the most important projects, we can recall: Back to Mine (2005), an album created to accompany the 1925’s silent film Battleship Potemkin; Fundamental (2006) with which they took on more mature and political themes; Yes (2009), the tenth musical projects by the duo for which they decided to shift away from the dark themes of the previous album and move towards a more optimistic sound and refined lyrics.

in 2009, Pet Shop Boys were honored at the Brit Awards with an award for the outstanding contribution to British music. They performed during the award show together with Lady Gaga and The Killers’ Brandon Flowers in a meddley of their most beloved songs.

After having published The Most Incredible Thing in 2011, the British duo released the single “WInner” the following year which they performed live at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in 2012. The single is part of the album Elysium published in 2012.

in 2014 they performed with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London for a memorial concert in honor of mathematician Alan Turing.

In 2016 they announced their thirteenth album Super which debuted at the third spot on the UK Album Chart and in support of which they organized the Super Tour which saw them perform live around the globe for the following three years.

2019 was a very busy year for the Pet Shop Boys. They published a new EP Agenda which, as Tennant explained, «includes three satirical songs and one a little sad. I believe it is due to the times we are experiencing». They performed on the stage of the Glastonbury Festival alongside The Killers with “Always on My Mind” and “Human”. Finally, they released “Dreamland”, a collaboration with the band Years & Years which preceded their fourteenth album Hotspot (2020).
