Kazu
Bio
Kazu’s history began in Kyoto, Japan, where she was born in 1969. Since she was a young girl, she had a keen concentration ability that her parents directed towards musical studies. Kazu found fulfillment in music and music opened a new and mysterious world for her that led her to create Blonde Redhead and to measure herself against solo projects.
Kazu moved when she was very young to the USA after a lucky encounter with musician, painter, and actor John Lurie. Under his wing, the Japanese artist discretely observed the underground world of fame, money, fashion, and art. Soon after she began to build her sound thanks to which she started to get recognition and founded, together with twins Simone and Amedeo Pace, and Maki Takahashi, the Blonde Redhead.
Without ever leaving her band, she collaborated with other artists from the American rock scene, such as The Black Heart Procession, Battles, and TV on the Radio.
Over the years, Kazu’s singular focus turned towards herself, moving away from collaborations. She started to work on her own project, Adult Baby (2019), presented by Ponderosa Music & Art. Conceived and written on the island of Elba, the solo debut album was a free and unrestrained introspective exploration in uncharted waters, a great realization of melodic cacophony. To realize the album, Kazu collaborated with some pioneers of the pop, electronic, rock, and indie scenes like RyuiChi Sakamoto, Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco, and acclaimed drummer Ian Chang. The release of Adult Baby was accompanied by a film directed by Eva Michon with Kazu herself as the protagonist which was filmed on Elba island.
