155 Tradate: A new cultural space finds a home in a former comb and shoe factory

by Luca Testoni
The new venture by Ponderosa founder Titti Santini has kicked off with an architecture exhibition. An exhibition dedicated to Enrico Griffini, the architect who, at the height of World War II in 1943, designed the plant for the then Czechoslovak cellulose multinational Koh-I-Noor in Tradate, and who was one of the leading figures of the Rationalist movement in Italy.
“When I was contacted as an expert on the work of the architect Griffini, I was asked to find a way to best showcase the extraordinary nature of this project. The first thing I thought was: ‘What could be more interesting than showing the construction site of a building under restoration?’” said architecture historian Massimiliano Savorra, curator of the Tradate exhibition alongside Griffini’s granddaughter Valeria and Alessia Interlandi from +in.Circle, among others. “Architecture is very often visited once completed. This setup allows us to understand how the building was conceived and how it was brought to life.”
Once the restoration work is completed, the former factory in the province of Varese—which, prior to closing in the 1990s, also housed a shoe factory—where the exhibition “Enrico A. Griffini. Costruire modernamente” (Building the Modern Way) will remain open to the public until December 20 (visits are available Thursday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with mandatory booking via Eventbrite), promises to become “a hybrid space capable of turning into a gathering place,” to quote Titti Santini. It was Santini who chose the name Tradate 155, where the numbers reference 11, a recurring number in his life. It will certainly be a multifunctional venue focused both on meeting local needs and supporting creative processes related to music and art.
