Dimitri Grechi Espinoza

On the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth, Dimitri Grechi Espinoza, Aziz Senol Filiz, and Guido Zorn present a tribute to the great African-American saxophonist who, through the sound of his tenor sax, sang of separation and called for a return to union with the Absolute.

This project is a “re-hearing” of his masterpiece A Love Supreme, a fresh, intense, and meditative interpretation of the revolutionary album that defined an era, revealing all its sonic nuances. Balancing free jazz with the orality of preaching, Coltrane speaks to all of America of a renewed sense of the human being, of its capacity for transcendence and shared spirituality.

With tenor sax, ney, bendir, double bass, and the words of Coltrane’s prayer over James Newton’s recorded voice, the three musicians revisit “Acknowledgement,” “Resolution,” “Pursuance,” and “Psalm,” preserving their deepest essence while simultaneously exploring radically new soundscapes, ranging from modal improvisation to Eastern mysticism and contemporary spirituality.
