Spain
Bio
Spain is an American band born in 1993 in California and it was initially composed by Josh Haden (vocals and bass), Ken Boudakian (guitar and keyboards), Merlo Podlewski (guitar) ed Evan Hartezell (drums).
In 1995 they published The Blue Moods Of Spain. It was marked by an intimate and minimalist essence contaminated by jazz and blues and became in a very short time one of alternative rock’s points of reference. The debut was followed by 1999’s She Haunts My Dreams and 2001’s I Believe which made the band not only acclaimed in the US but also overseas.
After I Believe (2001), the band took a break, but their music went on gathering approval and was chosen to be part of many soundtracks, like the one for The End of Violence (1999) by Wim Wenders and the tv series Six Feet Under (2003). Moreover, their track “Spiritual” from The Blue Moods of Spain was chosen to be re-arranged by both Johnny Cash and Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny.
In 2007 Haden reformed the band with a new line-up which included guitarist Tom Gladders, keyboardist Rany Kirk and drummer matt Mayhall. With these new members, Spain published its fourth album The Soul of Spain (2012) which the band presented in an incredible and unique Italian concert at the Maison Musique in Rivoli (TO).
In 2013 they collaborated with producer Gas Seyffert (who already worked with The Black Keys and Norah Jones) for their fifth album which was published in 2014 with the title Sargent Place. the record saw the participation of Josh’s father, Charlie Haden, a famous jazz double bassist, for the track “You and I”. The record brought Spain to the same dizzying level of success as the previous albums.
In 2016 Haden once againreinvented Spain’s line-up and with Danny Frankel (drums), Petra Haden (violin) e Kenny Lyon (guitar and keyboards), he released Carolina. It was a nostalgic and captivating record that retraced the lives of Haden’s forefathers during the Thirties and the history of the front man himself. Carolina confirmed the band’s ability to produce emotionally charged music that transports the listener through human themes like love, loss, and pain.
