Five-time Grammy® winners, Snarky Puppy have spent over twenty years developing a musical language that defies a single definition. Jazz, funk, soul, rhythm & blues, rock, gospel, and fusion coexist in a sound that has made the convergence of genres, cultures, and musicians its defining characteristic.
Led by bassist and composer Michael League, the collective has become one of the most recognizable groups on the contemporary instrumental scene, winning over an international audience far beyond the boundaries of jazz. Their music is complex yet accessible, built on the interaction between musicians, the groove, and above all, the energy of live performance.

Over the years, the band’s sound has continued to evolve. “Our soundscape has expanded enormously,” says League. “At first, we were more jazz-oriented and focused on the music itself. Then we became more groove-oriented, more emotional, and in a sense, deeper. We started focusing more on the ability to convey a clear message—one that listeners can understand without simplifying the music.”
The latest chapter in this ongoing evolution is *Somni*, released in November 2025 by GroundUP Music and born out of a new collaboration with the Metropole Orkest, the renowned Dutch orchestra known for its versatility across jazz, classical, and popular music.
Recorded live over the course of three evenings in Utrecht in January 2025, the project reunited the two groups ten years after their first collaboration, *Sylva*, the orchestral suite released in 2015 that went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album the following year.
“It’s by far the most ambitious project we’ve ever undertaken,” says League. This ambition coexists with a guiding principle that has always defined Snarky Puppy’s journey: “It can’t sound like what we’ve done before. The music has to feel like it’s going somewhere.”
And it is perhaps this constant drive toward something new that explains the story of Snarky Puppy: a band that, album after album and concert after concert, continues to push its boundaries without losing its identity.
