Kris Davis

Bio

Kris Davis (born in 1980) is a Canadian composer and jazz pianist known for her numerous collaborations with international artists and for her solo production. Davis is an innovative pianist and an improviser, who starts from her classical formation and explores it from diverse and unique perspectives.

Kris’s passion for piano started when she was six years old and was supplemented with the curiosity she had for jazz music in her adolescence when she started transcribing the music of artists such as Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett. Davis completed her musical formation in 2001 with a degree in jazz piano at the University of Toronto.

In 2001 Kris moved to New York, where she started performing in clubs until she published her first album Lifespan in 2003. This record shows Devis’s desire to creatively reinterpret jazz music.

Three years later, Kris – along with saxophonist Tony Malaby, drummer Jeff Davis and bassist Eivind Opsvik – published The Slightest Shift (2006), followed by Rye Eclipse (2008), Solo Piano (2009) e Good Citizen (2010).

In 2014, Kris Devis graduated in Composition at New York City College and the following year received the Doris Duke Impact Award. In 2016 she published Duopoly, which was recognized as one of the best albums of the year by the New York Times, Pop Matters, NPR, LA Times, and Jazz Times.Kris was then nominated Rising Star Pianist in 2017 e Rising Star Artist in 2018 by the magazine Downbeat, while she continued her career as a member of numerous jazz groups. In April 2017 Kris Davis charmed the Italian audience during her concert at Sala dei Giganti del Liviano in Padova.
