Trio Bobo

Bio

Trio Bobo was born in 2002 from the desire of bassist Faso and drummer Christian Meyer, historic members of the iconic band Elio e le Storie Tese, to take on new and unexpected genres and sounds, like jazz, fusion, and African groove, to give life to a musical project leaning towards cultural fusion and experimentation.

After playing with some quartets and quintets, among others, Little Big Band and Gli Energia Pura, Elio e le Storie Tese’s virtuous rhythmic section decided to keep the group’s line-up leaner. it’s after this realization that Christian Meyer attended a performance by renowned guitarist Alessio Menconi, a long-time collaborator of the great songwriter and lyricist Paolo Conte and of American percussionist and composer Billy Cobham. After a trial period, Menconi’s ability to balance improvisation and meticulous executions turned out to be in perfect accordance with the artistic flexibility of the rhythmic duo, so the definitive Trio Bobo was born.

In 2005 the band released the homonymous Trio Bobo, their debut album. the record contained the innovative and joyful spirit of the band members and was positively received by critics.

Despite the numerous artistic commitments of Faso, Meyer, and Menconi, a second album by Trio Bobo, Pepper Games, was released in 2016. The work confirmed the fundamental will of the band to present the fusion of genres less known by the Italian public, like funk and African sounds, but it also reflected eleven years of personal evolution for the three artists, as Meyers told La Repubblica: « In the meantime, we changed a bit individually because a musician is always in search of a personality that stands out more and more…Trio Bobo, to summarize, it’s changed in the sense of a greater personality, growth, a type of music that it’s easier to appreciate».

2019 it’s the year of Sensurround. The third album was dedicated to the cinematographic sound system from the Seventies by now obsolete. The record was an intense and inebriating musical experience that involved every musical influence of the trio, from jazz to funk, from rock to blues to pop, topped with African rhythms. But the album was a success thanks to the attention to composition and arrangements in perfect balance between 100% improvisation and 100% arrangements (Rockol’s interview with Meyer and Faso).

This project was presented in 2019 on the occasion of JAZZMI, a jazz festival in Milan, and in Rome for an extraordinary concert at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in January 2020.
