Introduction
Under the effect of global warming, the world we live in is now exposed to an unstable and unpredictable climate. Extreme weather events, heatwaves, droughts, heavy rains, floods and storms are more and more frequent. Phenomena like wildfires in the Siberian tundra and in Scandinavian forests a few years ago were just unthinkable. And caught by the multiple manifestations of global warming, air, water and soil pollution, more and more species are forced to flee territories that have become inhabitable.
This new world is full of adversities, hazards and unknowns. But, at the same time, it forces us to look for a new balance with the environment, the natural resources and all living beings we share planet Earth with: a new climate justice that is social and environmental.
What does it mean, on an emotional level, to live in a world out-of-balance? How can the tension between the climate crisis and a lifestyle that is what is causing it be resolved?
Extending the engagement in the campaign for the protection of the Arctic of “Elegy for the Arctic” - the piece Ludovico Einaudi composed and played on a floating platform facing the Wahlenbergbreen glacier, in the Svalbard Islands, Norway - we have curated a program of short films that explore the feelings and emotions that we experience when we face the climate and environmental crises. This emotional journey is organised in four moments.
The first moment is meditative: an immersion in the beauty of nature and a sentiment of loss and longing for a pure, pristine world.
The second moment is compassionate: the connection with people and communities who try to live in balance with the environment, using natural resources sustainably and aspiring to a fulfilling life in harmony with nature.
The third moment is angry: the recognition that our own actions are the cause of the climate and environmental crises, the rage against political, economic and financial leaders, and the sense of solidarity that comes from realising that the climate crisis can only be tackled through joint action.
The fourth moment is proactive: stories of people and initiatives seeking adaptation to harsher living conditions and regeneration of a new and better world.
The short films we have selected come from across the globe. Some are tiny productions, others have been awarded prizes in the most important environmental film festivals. We hope that they will be source of inspiration, activation and engagement.
