{"id":14918,"date":"2026-09-02T17:59:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T15:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/?p=14918"},"modified":"2026-09-02T17:59:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T15:59:13","slug":"extreme-dark-powerful-the-voice-of-diamanda-galas-resounds-once-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/en\/extreme-dark-powerful-the-voice-of-diamanda-galas-resounds-once-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Extreme, dark, powerful: the voice of Diamanda Gal\u00e1s resounds once more."},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-path-to-node=\"5,0\">by Luca Testoni<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,1\">Three concerts in <strong>Italy<\/strong> this <strong>September<\/strong> for a singer who revolutionized the very concept of vocal performance in <strong>20th-century<\/strong> popular music.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14924 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/diamanda-galas-post-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/diamanda-galas-post-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/diamanda-galas-post-768x1024.png 768w, https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/diamanda-galas-post-1152x1536.png 1152w, https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/diamanda-galas-post-1536x2048.png 1536w, https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/diamanda-galas-post-405x540.png 405w, https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/diamanda-galas-post-1x1.png 1w, https:\/\/ponderosa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/diamanda-galas-post-scaled.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2,0\">A vocal art marked by the most uncompromising avant-garde, a sound that, when it first emerged in the late <strong>1970s<\/strong>, evoked what critics of the era described as a cross between Greek tragedy, expressionist theater, and a psychoanalytic session.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2,1\">The San Diego-born artist and performer of Greek heritage will take the stage on <strong>September 23<\/strong> at the <strong>Auditorium Santa Chiara<\/strong> in <strong>Trento<\/strong>, <strong>September 26<\/strong> at the <strong>Auditorium Paganini<\/strong> in <strong>Parma<\/strong>, and <strong>September 30<\/strong> at the <strong>Teatro La Fenice in Senigallia (Ancona)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2\">Recently, <strong>Gal\u00e1s, <\/strong>a mezzo-soprano as versatile as she is unconventional, reissued the remastered version of her <strong>1988<\/strong> album <i data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"120\">\u201cYou Must Be Certain of the Devil\u201d<\/i> on her own label, <em>Intravenal Sound Operations<\/em>. At the time of its original release, the album was described as a fierce and sorrowful &#8220;<i data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"289\">j&#8217;accuse&#8221;<\/i> against the witch hunt targeting AIDS patients. Suspended between rock, electronics, spirituals, folk, and anarchic vocalizations, the album, entirely written and composed by <strong>Gal\u00e1s, <\/strong>evoked a deliberately dark, oppressive, and almost primitive atmosphere, spanning from ancient Greece to the superstitions and heresies of the Middle Ages. For the record, it is considered her most accessible work.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">Also recently released on her personal label is <i data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"48\">\u201cDe-formation: Second Piano Variations,\u201d<\/i> a live recording of her reworked piano score <i data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"134\">\u201cDas Fieberspital\u201d<\/i> (whose distressing and prophetic verses were written by German poet Georg Heym in the <strong>1910s<\/strong>).
