Born in Milan on December 5, 1972, he started playing the piano at the age of six and made his professional debut at 15. He studied jazz with Luca Flores<\/strong>, Mauro Grossi<\/strong> and Franco D\u2019Andrea<\/strong>. After graduating under Maestro Antonio Caggiula<\/strong> at the Conservatory Luigi Cherubini of Florence in 1993 and a brief experience as session musician in the pop world (with Raf<\/strong> and Jovanotti<\/strong>, among others), he soon became an established jazz musician, playing on the most prestigious stages worldwide (from Umbria Jazz to Montreal International Jazz Festival, from the Town Hall in New York to the Fenice in Venice, from the Barbican in London and Salle Pleyel in Paris to the Scala in Milan). He has also worked with great musicians including Richard Galliano<\/strong>, Phil Woods<\/strong>, Lee Konitz<\/strong>, Chick Corea<\/strong>, with whom he recorded live Orvieto<\/em><\/a> (ECM, 2011), as well as Gato Barbieri<\/strong>, Bill Frisell<\/strong>, John Abercrombie<\/strong>, Pat Metheny<\/strong>, Bobby McFerrin<\/strong>, Sol Gabetta<\/strong>, Fred Hersch<\/strong>, Martial Solal<\/strong>, Chano Dominguez<\/strong>, Chucho Vald\u00e9s<\/strong>, Gonzalo Rubalcaba<\/strong>, Uri Caine<\/strong>, Diego Schissi<\/strong>, Igudesman & Joo<\/strong>, Miroslav Vitous<\/strong>, Aldo Romano<\/strong>, Jimmy Cobb<\/strong>, Roy Haynes<\/strong>, Michel Portal<\/strong>, Luis Bacalov<\/strong>, Riz Ortolani<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the milestones in his career, the crucial collaboration with his mentor Enrico Rava<\/strong>, uninterrupted since 1996. At Rava\u2019s side, he has performed hundreds of concerts and recorded as many as 13 CDs. The most recent include: Tati<\/em><\/a> (ECM, 2005), in a trio with Paul Motian<\/strong> on drums (CD of the year for French Acad\u00e9mie du jazz), The Third Man<\/em><\/a> (ECM, 2007, the best CD of the year for American magazine \u201cAllaboutjazz\u201d and for Italian \u201cMusica Jazz\u201d), and New York Days<\/em><\/a> (ECM, 2008), in a quintet with Mark Turner<\/strong>, Larry Grenadier<\/strong> and Paul Motian<\/strong> (CD of the year for \u201cMusica Jazz\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was rated best new talent in 1998 by the referendum of the \u201cMusica Jazz\u201d critics; in that year, as leader of his band L\u2019orchestra del Titanic<\/strong>, he paid tribute to Italian music of the 1930s and 1940s with the record-show Abbassa la tua radio<\/em><\/a> (with many important Italian singers and musicians).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years he has worked with experimental and \u201ccross-border\u201d musicians both on stage and in recordings (Hector Zazou<\/strong>, Giovanni Sollima<\/strong>, Elliot Sharp<\/strong>, Zeena Parkins<\/strong>, Sainhko Namcythclack<\/strong>); he has also played his piano for singers such as Elio e le storie tese<\/strong>, Johnny Dorelli<\/strong>, Luciano Pavarotti<\/strong>, Andrea Bocelli<\/strong>, and in particular the Italian pop star Irene Grandi<\/strong>, with whom he signed the album Irene Grandi e Stefano Bollani<\/em><\/a> (Carosello, 2012).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of his works are rather unconventional, such as La gnosi delle fanfole<\/em><\/a>, where he set surreal poems by Fosco Maraini<\/strong> to music together with singer-songwriter Massimo Altomare<\/strong> (1998), and the album of Scandinavian songs Gleda<\/em><\/a> (Stunt Records, 2005), recorded in Denmark with Jesper Bodilsen<\/strong> on double bass and Morten Lund<\/strong> on drums, two musicians with whom he has been playing in a close-knit trio since 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recorded four CDs in his name for prestigious French Label Bleu: Les fleurs bleues<\/em><\/a> (2002), a tribute to writer Raymond Queneau<\/strong>, recorded in trio with Scott Colley<\/strong> and Clarence Penn<\/strong>; the solo-CD Sm\u00e5t sm\u00e5t<\/em><\/a> (2003), ranked as one of the top ten jazz albums of the year by English magazine \u201cMojo\u201d; Concertone<\/em><\/a> (2004), a work for jazz trio and symphonic orchestra with Paolo Silvestri, who arranged and directed the Orchestra Regionale Toscana<\/strong>; and the double album I visionari<\/em><\/a> (2006) with his new quintet plus Mark Feldman<\/strong>, Paolo Fresu<\/strong> and Petra Magoni<\/strong> as guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He created Vivere Jazz Festival in Fiesole (FI) and was its artistic director from 2005 to 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His more recent productions are Big Band! <\/em><\/a>(Verve, 2013) <\/em>with the NDR Big Band<\/strong> of Hamburg directed and arranged by Geir Lysne<\/strong>, awarded with the 2013 ECHO Preis; Joy In Spite Of Everything<\/em><\/a>(ECM, 2014), CD of the year for the magazine \u201c<\/em>Musica Jazz\u201d; Sheik Yer Zappa<\/em><\/a> (Decca black, 2014), a live recording to honour Frank Zappa<\/strong>\u2019s music; Arrivano gli alieni<\/em><\/a>(Decca black, 2015), his debut as singer-songwriter; Napoli Trip<\/em><\/a>(Decca, 2016) with many musicians including Daniele Sepe<\/strong>, Manu Katch\u00e9<\/strong> and Jan Bang<\/strong>; Mediterraneo<\/em><\/a>(ACT, 2017), a live show recorded in Berlin with Jesper Bodilsen<\/strong>, Morten Lund<\/strong>, Vincent Peirani<\/strong> and some members of the Berliner Philharmoniker<\/strong>, with arrangements by Geir Lysne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2018, he released Que Bom<\/em><\/a>, his first album of his label Alobar. Consisting of original tunes recorded in Rio, it features Caetano Veloso<\/strong> and Jo\u00e3o Bosco <\/strong>among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second album by Alobar is Piano Variations on Jesus Christ Superstar<\/em><\/a>(2020), a tribute to the rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber<\/strong> and Tim Rice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His curiosity has often made him a moderator\/interviewer on stage with writers and thinkers such as Rupert Sheldrake<\/strong>, Corrado Malanga<\/strong>, Mauro Biglino<\/strong>, Anne Givaudan<\/strong>, Igor Sibaldi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
