Five-time Grammy\u00ae winners, Snarky Puppy have spent over twenty years developing a musical language that defies a single definition. Jazz, funk, soul, rhythm & blues, rock, gospel, and fusion coexist in a sound that has made the convergence of genres, cultures, and musicians its defining characteristic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Led by bassist and composer Michael League, the collective has become one of the most recognizable groups on the contemporary instrumental scene, winning over an international audience far beyond the boundaries of jazz. Their music is complex yet accessible, built on the interaction between musicians, the groove, and above all, the energy of live performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, the band\u2019s sound has continued to evolve. \u201cOur soundscape has expanded enormously,\u201d says League. \u201cAt first, we were more jazz-oriented and focused on the music itself. Then we became more groove-oriented, more emotional, and in a sense, deeper. We started focusing more on the ability to convey a clear message\u2014one that listeners can understand without simplifying the music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest chapter in this ongoing evolution is *Somni*, released in November 2025 by GroundUP Music and born out of a new collaboration with the Metropole Orkest, the renowned Dutch orchestra known for its versatility across jazz, classical, and popular music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recorded live over the course of three evenings in Utrecht in January 2025, the project reunited the two groups ten years after their first collaboration, *Sylva*, the orchestral suite released in 2015 that went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s by far the most ambitious project we\u2019ve ever undertaken,\u201d says League. This ambition coexists with a guiding principle that has always defined Snarky Puppy\u2019s journey: \u201cIt can\u2019t sound like what we\u2019ve done before. The music has to feel like it\u2019s going somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
