Ron Carter<\/strong> (Ferndale, 1937) is a legendary and limitless musician and double bass player. The epitome of class and elegance, Carter<\/strong> is amongst the greatest jazzists of all times and his prodigious technique makes him a brilliant musician and a world-class artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After having approached the study of cello and classical music, and having encountered numerous difficulties due to racist stereotypes, Carter<\/strong> decided to devote himself to the study of contrabass and to move to New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In New York, he joined, in 1963, the Miles David Quintet,<\/strong> where he stayed until 1968. In the early Seventies, Carter<\/strong> played in the New York Bass Choir<\/strong> and in the New York Jazz Quartet<\/strong> together with Michael Legrand<\/strong> and artists such as Hubert Laws<\/strong>, Stanley Turrentine,<\/strong> and George Benson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1976, together with pianist Kenny Barron<\/strong>, bassist Buster Williams<\/strong> and drummer Ben Riley<\/strong>, Carter<\/strong> founded his first quartet, in which he played an instrument he invented himself: it is a \u201csmall\u201d bass that has a higher tuning than the standard one, thanks to which it emerges in the rhythmic section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside this experience, Carter<\/strong> composed \u201cCall Sheet Blues\u201d used in the soundtrack of the film Round Midnight <\/em>(1985), which granted him a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1994, Carter<\/strong> won a second Grammy Award for his contribution to the album A Tribute to Miles<\/em> (1994), and subsequently signed a contract with record label Blue Note, for which he published The Bass and I<\/em> (1997), So What<\/em> (1998) and Orfeu<\/em> (1999).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the following years, Carter <\/strong>continued his activity as a musician, publishing numerous studio albums and tributes to legendary jazzists: important to remember were surely When Skies Are Grey<\/em> (2001), Stardust <\/em>(2002) a tribute to bassist Oscar Pettiford<\/strong> and Dear Miles<\/em> (2006) an album recorded to celebrate Miles Davis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2011, Carter <\/strong>started his big-band musical project and founded Ron Carter\u2019s Great Big Band, <\/strong>with which he played Robert M.Freedman<\/strong>\u2019s arrangements and collaborated with pianist Mulgrew Miller <\/strong>and drummer Lewis Nash<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One year later, Carter<\/strong> was included in the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame and subsequently, together with drummer Gerry Gibbs, <\/strong>published two albums: Thrasher Dream Trio<\/em> (2013) and We’re Back <\/em>(2014).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After some collaborations with artists like the saxophonist Houston Pearson<\/strong>, the pianist Ethan Iverson<\/strong> and the writer\/poet\/painter Danny Simmons<\/strong>, in February 2020 Ron Carter<\/strong> performed in Italy for two special evenings at Real Teatro Santa Cecilia in Palermo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
