Prioritising feeling over perfectionism. This is the credo that drives the restless creativity of multi-instrumentalist, rapper and producer Alfa Mist.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since the release of his first full-length project Nocturne <\/em>in 2015, Alfa has established himself as one of the UK\u2019s most focused, in-demand and distinct musical voices. He has worked with the likes of Jordan Rakei <\/strong>and Tom Misch<\/strong>. <\/em>Artists look to him for his unique blend of intimate bedroom production and expansive jazz group orchestration, since Alfa is yet to be boxed into a specific genre. His music spans everything from hip-hop beat-making to producing for artists such as rapper Loyle Carner<\/strong>, composing neo-classical works for the London Contemporary Orchestra<\/strong>, and reworking tracks from composer \u00d3lafur Arnalds <\/strong>and pioneering jazz label Blue Note. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Growing up in east London, Alfa\u2019s journey to jazz was an unexpected one. \u201cThere\u2019s no access to jazz where I come from,\u201d he says. \u201cSociety made us think that there were only three options for success for Black kids who had the same amount of money as me: be a musician, sportsperson or criminal.\u201d Naturally drawn to music thanks to the vitality of the grime scene that was breaking across the capital, Alfa would play with music production software during his break times at school, learning to put together fast-paced grime instrumentals. As he dug deeper into UK rap and hip-hop, he became curious about the samples used on records by the likes of Blackstar, Madlib and J Dilla. \u201cThose producers were the gateway to jazz,\u201d he comments. They ultimately led him to teach himself piano by ear to break down the harmonic intricacies of their formative tracks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n By 2017, Alfa had written, arranged and produced the eight tracks that make up his debut album, Antiphon. <\/em>Featuring bassist and singer Kaya Thomas-Dyke <\/strong>and guitarist Jamie Leeming<\/strong>, who are still members of his band today, Alfa blended snippets of conversation with his two older brothers on the importance of family amidst intricate, driving instrumentals and luscious acoustic arrangements. It was a breakthrough success, amassing over 10 million views on YouTube and millions more on Spotify, marking Alfa out as a fresh talent with a remarkably mature and self-assured poise in the studio. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Following albums, 2019\u2019s Structuralism <\/em>and 2021\u2019s debut for ANTI-, Bring Backs<\/em>, continued Alfa\u2019s musical introspection. Structuralism <\/em>produced nine searching yet deeply soulful tracks, questioning how we formulate our identities through Alfa\u2019s experience of being raised by his Ugandan mother. Bring Backs<\/em>, meanwhile, featured groove-based explorations and meandering fragments tied together by a remarkable poem written by Hilary Thomas <\/strong>expressing the sensuous realities of creating community in a new country. Always drawing on his own experiences, Bring Backs <\/em>is Alfa at his most unguarded, expressing the constant concern of being unable to escape the uncertainty of poverty, even when success is at your door. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Where his previous work might have largely traded in a mid-tempo, meandering feel of self-analysis through instrumentation, his 5th album Variables found <\/em>Alfa driving forwards with renewed intensity and purpose. \u201cThe whole album is more uptempo and influenced by the freedom of returning to gigs,\u201d Alfa explains. \u201cIt felt like I was coming back to my early days of making grime beats and creating tracks that made me want to bop my head fast.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n The return to live shows was a welcome one for Alfa and his fans, resulting in an instantly sold-out run of debut US shows as well as headline performances at London\u2019s Barbican, Outernet, Cross The Tracks and the renowned Sydney Opera House. <\/strong>The urgent energy of Alfa\u2019s five-piece band provides an infectious vitality to his gigs, as well as producing instinctual responses to his music in the studio. \u201cWe always have limited time and we record to tape, which means we can only get two takes \u2013 if you want a third, we have to delete one,\u201d Alfa says. \u201cThat means I make really meticulous decisions before recording but once I give the music to the band, I let them bring their own expressions in the moment.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n It is a balance between feeling and perfectionism that ultimately gives Alfa\u2019s music its depth and capacity for repeated listening. It is also an ethos that has enabled his remarkable work-ethic to date. \u201cI\u2019ve never been a \u2018one album every four years\u2019 artist \u2013 I want to put out new projects every year,\u201d he says. \u201cMusic is an extension of my life; it is the practice of creating.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n That practice is certainly fruitful. Alfa currently heads up his own label Sekito <\/strong>as well as continuing to host the Are We Live <\/strong>podcast with Barney Artist <\/strong>and Jordan Rakei. <\/strong>As label boss he has had records cut from the likes of Jamie Leeming, Rudi Creswick, JSPHYNX and Kaya Thomas-Dyke <\/strong>as well as collaborations under 2nd Exit <\/strong>with musician Lester Duval. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For his latest Sekito offering, Alfa revisits his stellar 2024 performance with Manchester\u2019s extraordinary string outfit Amika Quartet at heralded venue Kings Place (London), capturing the magic of the evening within an awe-inspiring live album. Featuring a handful of brand new, never-before-heard tracks (alongside a number of expansions of previous releases), \u2018Recurring\u2019 sees Alfa drawing inspiration from classic live Jazz recordings, capturing a unique moment in time that can never be replicated or replayed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Continuing to evolve his creative vision, Alfa Mist has announced his new album, Roulette, out 3rd October on his own label, Sekito Records. Roulette is a sci-fi concept album set in a dystopian near-future where reincarnation is a scientifically proven fact. Conceived, written and produced by Alfa, the record features New York rapper Homeboy Sandman, British soul star Tawiah, and vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Kaya Thomas-Dyke. Alongside the album announcement, Alfa has unveiled a special headline show at London\u2019s prestigious Royal Albert Hall on 25th November.
