Arto Lindsay (b. 1953) has been trying to erase the line between music and art for more than four decades. As a member of DNA, he contributed to the foundation of No Wave. His refusal to learn conventional guitar technique forced him to invent something entirely new.
As bandleader for the Ambitious Lovers he developed an intensely subversive pop music, a hybrid of American and Brazilian styles.
Lindsay produced many records during the 1990s most often in Brasil and in Japan. The records he produced for Caetano Veloso, with Peter Scherer and alone, are considered a crucial part of the Brazilian's star discography. He won a Latin Grammy for Marisa Monte's Memória's crônicas e Declarações de Amor.
In 1994 he began making solo records. Throughout his career, Lindsay has collaborated with both visual and musical artists, including Vito Acconci, Ryuichi Sakamoto,Laurie Anderson, Animal Collective, Matthew Barney, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.
Having been involved with carnaval in Brazil for many years in 2004 he began making his own parades. Places where they have been presented include the Biennale de Venezia, Performa in New York, and in Hong Kong and Berlin.
Since the early 2000s Lindsay has been including performer controlled surround sound in his solo performances and making sound installations.
